Having trouble setting timing please help!
Well i cant seem to get the motor to idle around 800 rpm set the idle screw all the way in. disconnected my idle air control to try to get it to drop and the only way i can do it is if i retard the timing then the rpm drops but the timing is way off so how do i set it. IS there a vacuum hose i can disconnect? Also one more question i have a timing light with advance and when i advance the **** the marks on the motor move one way and when i rev the motor the marks move the other way. Shouldn';t the engine be advancing the timing or am i just not looking at this the right way. If anyone can help me out that would be great.

ok here's how you set your timing: first make sure the engine is at normal temp(fan turns on twice) connect the diagnotics connector(2 pin inside car) connect the timing gun to power and negative on the battery and the #1 cylinder sparkplug wire(wire closest to camshaft gear). Now point the timing gun at pulley, you should see a red mark lining up with the arrow on the plastic cover, that's BTDC. adjust the timing gun to 16 degrees. it should in the three white marks area of the pulley. the arrow should be pointing at the middle one. that is 16 degrees TDC. if it's not line up then adjust your distributor either retard it or advance the distributor to get the pulley mark to line up with the arrow. and that's how you set your timing. if you have some troubles try this place http://www.c-speedracing.com click on the "how to" section.

Ya i know how to set the timing. Thats not the problem the problem is that it is 16 degrees btdc at 700-800rpm but i can't get it to idle that low. How can i get it to idle that low so i can adjust the timing to 16 degrees. Also maybe the timing is being retarded instead of advanced just wondering when you rev the motor should the marks move up or down just to double check all of that is working right. Or IS there a way i can adjust the timing for like 1,300-1,500 rpm what would the timing be then? What would make my car idle high. Could it be because of my skunk2 stage two cams are sending in more air with the stock ecu cause a more leaner mixture cauing my rpm to be higher. Just a thought. If someone has some advice on how to set it exactly using a higher rpm that would be awesome. thanks
I hope you're not using the factory tach as guide since it's not very accurate. My timing gun has a built-in tach. when I did my timing it was 670-640 rpm for my old d16z6 engine and that was on the timing gun. on the factory tach guage it shows 900-1000 rpm. I suggest you get a better tach for the car. btw you haven't told us what car, engine, mods you have yet. that would be easier to figure the problem if you did that in the first place.
yeah your skunk2 cams would play a part in your higher rpm to a certain extend.

Ok wellhere goes. 94 Cx and i just put in my built gsr b18c1 motor. I used to have an ls motor before for a long time. Now the motor was fully rebuilt ITR pistons, connecting rods, new bearings seals ITr oil and water pump, 00 gsr tranny with ITR final drive and LSD, skunk2 manifold, stage 2 cams, valves, valve springs and retainers, skunk cam gears, new timing belt, msd ignition, ngk r's, aem cold air, dc 4-1 polished header, 2.5 inch exhaust, It feels likemy car runs a little rough i have only driven it once soo far. The vtec does kick even though there is huge lag. I know i need to get a fuel pressure regulator so i don't get that lag with vtec hits. Also i have an aem ems which i am hopefully going to get to work tomorrow. I wanted to get the timing right first to do a pull on the dyno before i would start tuning but i am going to try and see what the aem ems tells me. It has its own tach and so much more that will tell me a lot more about whats going on with the engine hehehe. Just wondering but the tach on the ems on my labtop should be as good if not better then a good aftermarket tach? just wondering i am going to try and do it tomorrow. And if i am happy with how its running then i have a good chance of running it on a dyno on saturday. I don't think my stock tach is off. Well at least it wasn't with the ls motor but this motor is a lot different. Hopefully i can get the ems to work right tomorrow. I'll post on what happens.
