Piston rings, valve seals, PCV valve... do a compression/leakdown test to find out.

How often do you beat on it? It could just be the typical puff of carbon/fuel that most cars get after whomping on it after a while. Get yurself a compression test and check out c-speedracing.com for directions. It will take 30 mins total and its free to do. Leakdown test would be good also, hows the oil level?

What color is the smoke? White, blueish, or Black?? overheating? check your oil level. your most likely burning oil.
