Default frustration.... no vtec when warm

ok this is a b20 block with a b16 head. It has a type-r oil pump. The only stock thing in the block is the crank and the oil pick up. It runs on a p28 and uses a fields controller for activation.

The problem... when the car is run for approximately 30 min vtec will cease to operate. All the lines, oil passages have been checked for obstructions, the solenoid was replaced for a known functioning one. It still occurs when the fields controller is off. It only happens when the car gets into operating temp.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

It doesn't seem to be electrical,

Hmm. Not a pro wit this but I don't think vtec is supposed to kick on when the engine is cold, atleast I have never heard it kick on. Maybe the wiring there is backwards, ie vtec on when cold and off when at running temp. Just an idea.

The oil level was checked and was fine. When I said warm I mean that the car is already at operating temp, vtec works for a while then it begins to studder in and out of vtec. This happens only after the car has reached operating temp and has been there for some time. The car is not over-heating though. Oh and it happens regardless of the fields being connected

I don't understand why everyone has a problem with it. It does what it was made to do. Nothing more, nothing less. Granted, I wouldn't buy one for $300 new, but when they can be had for $100 used, it's a cost effective way control fuel. Especially if your setup doesn't require anything more.

Have you removed the fields controller and returned it back to how it was when it ran fine? When trouble shooting I always return the machine, car/computer/whatever back to the state it was when it ran fine and remove whatever I changed before the problem occured.

Yeah, tried that and it still occurs. No oil leaks, every thing seems to work.
It feels like vtec comes in and out, like oil pressure is oscillating up and down. The oil pump is new though.

Check oil pressure at cold and operating temp.

DUDE!
I just have the same problem this weekend!!!! Not sure though.
My motor did that this weekend to!! ran a can of motor flush through it and boom it works fine now...
Checked everything oil pressure was perfect. Solenoid was fine. I mean went through everything!!!!!!!!!! WTF still wasn't working!
So I mean it may be a shot in the dark....but I gave it a try. NOTE: I am running STOCK parts. Head I am running was the one that came with the motor, ECU fully stock.
Be sure to follow the directions if you do it> 5 min flush. Change the oil & filter.
May want to get a pro's thought about this? But it sounds to me that you may not have the proper oil presure to operate VTEC. Need to find out that the head is getting the proper amount of presure, to little/ will not work. Hope I helped some.
