Default Flywheel Install Problem

Installing a new 7.5 lbs Fidanza Flywheel on my GSR motor. The flywheel did not come with new bolts and I was told to reuse the factory bolts. I have a new pilot bearing too.

The problem I have is there seems to be some play with the rotation of the flywheel on the crank. I have the bolts finger tight but its like the holes for the bolts are bigger than the shoulder of the bolts so the flywheel can rock back and forth. It would seem to me that it would be very important that there be no slack in the flywheel.

I took a video of it because I know this is hard to visual from my description. Here is the video link. It is only 2 megs long. You can see how I can rotate the flywheel and I can assure you when I do this the crank is not turning at all.

It would seem that bolts with a larger diameter shoulder would be able to fill the bolt holes fully and not allow this to happen. What do you guys think?

Once you torque them down it won't move. Plus if you use bigger bolts what will they bolt in to. Bigger bolts won't fit into the existing holes. I suppose you could try to find bolts with a thinker neck and then regular size thread.

I know if I torque down the bolts it wont move but that doesnt mean it wil be centered, that means it will just be stuck. Now what happends when Im at the track, I launch and the whole flywheel shifts? Doesnt sound too pretty, does it?

I called Fidanza and they said I shouldnt need bigger bolts. Im going to call him back and get him to look at the video.

Talked with Dave at Fidanza. Great guy. He saw the video and say thats a normal about of play and to just go ahead and torque the bolts down.

The video shows clearly enough how the flywheel has rotational play, yet does it have play in any other direction, say vertically or horizontally? If so, I would take extreme caution. I can envision the launch, the flywheel/pressure plate gets a little off center and you'll get a mad vibration.

If you were to remove the flywheel from the engine alltogether. How loose are the bolts when inserted into the holes of the flywheel? Can you use a caliper to measure the bolt and the inside of the hole? <- What is the difference in the measurement?

Are the holes in the flywheels round or slotted anyhow? If they're slotted, you can cut some steel to length and shim each hole so it won't move at all. Or, find some bolts with a larger neck as qi_doy mentioned.

So you agree this could potentiall be hazardous.

The flywheel holes are round. Thicker bolts could easily fix the problem but good luck finding them. I will take it off and get a good pic of the flywheel holes vs the bolt shoulders.

have you by chance checked to see if the oem one does the same thing with just finger tightened bolts?
