Default External oil cooler + OEM unit?

Using the H-series OEM oil cooling unit (on the back of the block, etc.), oil temps still can reach over 275-300degrees, thus I need an external oil cooler.

Is it possible to add an external unit and still keep the OEM unit?

Bump for a good question. Will the pressure loss affect anything?

I've heard people mention that Prelude's don't have a lot of clearance behind hte oil filter, so you can't run a sandwich plate adapter to feed/return the oil for the oil cooler.

If that's the case, then you'll have to use a spin-on adapter and use a remote filter system to facilitate all teh plumbing for the oil cooler.

Pressure loss is a certainty b/c the volume of the oiling system is increased. I've heard that it's not much tho. I'll know when I get my kit on.

Any links to someone who makes a spin-on adapter, etc? Any help is appreciated.

1 Perma-cool M20x1.5 Spin-On Adapter (2 - 1/2" NPT Ports) PRM-116 $13.99 (summitracing.com)
.2 Aeroquip 1/2" NPT to -10AN Adapter AER-FCM2009 $4.85 (racerpartswholesale.com)
.2 Aeroquip -10AN 90 deg Hose-end AER-FCM4034 $20.95 (racerpartswholesale.com)
or
.2 Aeroquip -10AN 60 deg Hose-end AER-FCM4044 $21.95 (racerpartswholesale.com)
-depends on how much clearance you need, but you should always try to pick the straight possible plumbing scheme

1 Perma-cool 3/4"-16 Remote Filter Head (4 - 1/2" NPT Ports) PRM-1791 $19.95 (summitracing.com)
I'll leave the fittings up to you. You can use Bosch 3310 or 3422 filters for the 3/4"x16tpi filter head.

You'll also need a 20ft box of -10AN braided hose. I don't recommend using non-steel braided hose b/c if you sheer a line, the engine is gonna be toast.

I'd normally totally agree on the comment about stainless steel braided line, however there is another issue that should be thought about.

If you have braided line and it's close to a hot item (like the exhaust or turbo), you will not notice if the internal rubber is getting damaged. In other words, it would be possible to damage the hose and have it still look OK.

It's all about routing it, regardless of the type of hose.

I've used Aeroquip FC332 hose and push on fittings when I want to keep the cost down. It's rated to 250 PSI.
