Default experianced oil pump installers here

my book says to pack the oil pump with patroleum jelly before installing,is this right and whats the best way to lubricate it?also should i replace the pick-up or anything else while im at it?

yes, replace the pickup. The petroleum is there so the pump will be lubricated. Also to make a good seal within the pump so it will make good suction to draw in oil and work right away.

Although I dont think the book calls for it some hondabond on the oil pickup gasket and loctite on the bolts are a good idea. Just dont over do it and clog the hole.
