Engine replace..Do I have to pull tranny too
I am pulling the Engine (D16Z) on a 5G HB Si and replaceing it with a lower milage one. The helms manual says you have to remove the engine and tranny together then replace......Can I save a few steps and leave the tranny in and just replace the engine? Thanks
what? no?
well, I beg to differ, but I am no expert on D series stuff...
I figured you may be able to drop the tranny -
1) pull it off and move it away from the block.
2) then lift the motor out and replace with new freshie motor.
3) bolt tranny up to new motor.
4) done.
hmm, I had heard of people doing just this, especially when swapping the same motor for a newer or built one of the same engine code.
when you do a clutch install, it is possible to remove the motor at that point, so I do not know why you couldnt swap motors while the tranny is just pulled aside but still under the car.

You can do that. However, it is far easier to remove the tranny once it is outside of the car. Also, you will need a way to hold the tranny from below, and yank the motor from above. You are in effect still removeing the tranny, you are just doing it before you remove the motor, which is harder.

well HX mans on crack. I have done so many swaps its not even funny. And pulling a motor is almost as easy as swapping the trans. Plus its a sinch to swap a trans out of a car. Just pull the motor, then swap the trans over and your set. You will save time in the long run.

honestly, there is no reason to NOT remove the tranny, it's not going to save any time or effort. It's much easier take the tranny on/off when you aren't lying on your back (ie, when the engine isn't in the car). Just pull it all.
Man, pull the whole thing that way you can inspect the flywheel and clutch and replace it all back on without having to bend in funny directions. Plus, you can look at everything and make sure there isn't something else that is going to cause you problems.
Pull the whole motor... you are already going to have removed damn near everything that is connected to remove the block. When you chain up the motor, offset the center link toward the tranny side & remove it somewhat crooked to the right to clear the mounts. Removing the axles & the shift linkage will probably be the hardest part. The correct size pickle fork should be used to remove the axles and correct size punch and an air hammer with the correct punch should be used to remove the pin out of the shift linkage. You will save time in the long run by not having to crawl under the car & support both the motor & the tranny as you disconect them, since there is not an independent "engine" mount on the left, whereas the tranny mount holds the left side.
