ok so i have a chance to get a b18b LS engine to start my ls/vtec swap. it only has about 25k miles on it from a local junk yard.. the thing is, is that the engine has been sitting in their engine house/shed/whatever for like 3 years... is this still ok since im only using the bottom end? what do you think?

 

Have you pulled the valve cover, spark plugs, and the oil pan? Any honest person would let you remove those items for inspection before you pay for it (be a good guy and put it back together). You'll be able to check for sludge, cam wear, metal chips, etc. You still may run into trouble with cylinder wall rust or the rings being stuck but thats the gamble you make when buying an engine thats been sitting for 3 years. If that turned out to be the case and you already bought it I wouldn't think he should be liable for it because neither of you can predict how its going to be internally.

It sounds like you said it has been sitting in a shed. Was it exposed to rain? Was it wrapped in thick plastic? If it was wrapped in plastic it's probably in decent shape.

Definitely. I always see that with engines that sit in storage.
