Default engine miss when VTEC engages

Like the title states, my b16 has a steady miss when VTEC engages. The ECU is a P28 with stage3 HONDATA. If I unplug the VTEC solonoid the problem disappears. The miss runs from VTEC engagement to redline. I've tried new plug wires and plugs but they don't help. The fact that it works fine with the VTEC solonoid unhooked leads me to believe that it is not a mechanical problem with the engine but a problem in the ECU. When VTEC engages, the ECU advances the timing, correct? I just need someone to verify my thought process or maybe someone has a new angle I haven't seen yet. Thanks

Sounds like ignition. Never had that problem so I'd like to know to.
