Default Engine Compression/Leakdown Testing While Out of the Vehicle?

a friend of mine is going to be purchasing a b18c that's already been pulled from the car it was in, but before he gives the kid the money he wants to make sure the motor is in good shape.

Is it possible to do a engine compression and leakdown test while the motor is out of the car? and will the results be as accurate?

Any help is appreciated
