Engine backfires through the intake
I am having issues with a b16 install into a 97 lx civic. When you give it gas the engine either tries to die out or it back fires through the intake. The timing is dead on, everything is wired properly, the only code I get is for the iacv. I had a mechanic look at it also an he is can't figure it out. The only thing I can figure is maybe something with the valves. Anybody have any suggestions?
you left out vital info like..
what year is the B16A you dropped in?
what ecu are you using?
are you using the right distributor (it could be faulty-- take it off and look inside to see if there's any loose floatin' around in there)?
Do you have the spark plugs correctly plugged to the distributor?
it really sounds like a timing issue though...
what ignition compoents

Ok good point. It is a 93 b16 with a 93 ecu via skunk2 harness. I am using a 98 dist. which I have switched with a known good one, the same goes for the ecu. I have checked the plug wires to insure the are in proper order as well as the injector wires. Stock ignition all around.

I had a jeep that did that exact thing, I know it is not a honda but the symptoms were the same. The exhaust lobe on the cam shaft had worn down to almost nothing so on the exhaust stroke, all the exhaust was being pushed out the intake. In dont know, just somethin to look at.
The compression is the next step. I am doing that tonight. As far as the timing I have quadruple checked that. I will look at the exhaust cam and see if it looks worn. Thanks for all the suggestions.

so, I suspect you wired your engine harness for OBD2, correct?
Well I used the stock engine harness and added the vtec, knock and vtm wires.
hmm.. and you're only getting one code thrown from the engine check light for the IACV? no more codes other than that one ?
timing is way off
i know you say you checked it
have a mechanic do so also
maybee its some freak problem but i had the same thing
happen to a 4AGE of mine it was because the exhaust cam had slipped
when i was replacing seals
i had to do alot to get it all lined back up
the key is to make sure you do everything in the right order

clogging injectors, low fuel pressure, and worn out plugs can all cause your exact symptoms. Check these first. Also check the coil tower in the distributor- make sure the spring is in it and that the distributor cap is in good shape. I highly recommend using Honda ignition components- all aftermarket caps are garbage. Also check your cam and ignition timing.

yah my old swap did this when it was put in, it back fired out the intake, it turned out that my timing was retarded by 15 degrees, its a timing issue, your timingg is not right on, check the timign on the cams
Well I know the timing on the cams is right. It does have an aem fuel rail and regulator. I did use 98 b20 injectors. Maybe I should swith back to the original injectors and see how it does.
