Default car bogg's when VTEC opens....HELP!!!!

car ran fine till the distributor failed. so i replaced the distributor, and now the car bogg's up top. i had my brother (a mechanic) get my timing done, to see if it was that, but it still does it. did a whole tune up. plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil and it still does it. it sounds like somthing is caught in my intake and there's no power up top.i checked to see if i had a check engine code, but none new (had intake air temp sensor die, but that was there before the distributor died) i'm running a 99 B16 w/ skunk2 adapter and a 94 GS-R ecu. help me please!!!!

theres your problem
b16 with gsr ecu
gsr's vtec turns on at 4800 wich is a little low for the b16.
its also trying to open secondaries (wich you dont have)
im pretty sure on this.
you need to get it rechipped to b16 specs or go get a real b16 ecu
good luck
edit: another reason it may bog is because up high, where the secondaries should open the gsr ecu might be giving the engine too much fuel.

I dont think its that. The gsr ecu will acticate the vtec selonoid one way or anouther. Thats all the b16 needs to run vtec. I think your problem is your iat sensor. I know on my swap...that sensor was bad and the vtec would not activate with it being that way. You said the car already ran fine with that ecu right? All you did was change the dist. right? Maybe the coils going bad or a new cap and rotor? Spark plug gap?

i would check the fuel injectors and othe fuel supplies, then again, no one runs a b16a with a gsr ecu.

kamin is probably on to something with the secondaries. Has anyone ever compared fuel maps of a 94 gsr ECU to a b16 ECU?

i had same problem, gsr ecu with my b16, well b16 has no torqe and when vtec comes in the motor was never designed to have such low vtec cross over and it bogs out, though if you notice around 5600 (stock cross over) motor starts to pull like fraight train! good luck, eric

well i know vtec is gonna come on no matter what
its just where it comes on
on the gsr motor its lower but it has secondaries because the cam is more agressive and it has butterflies. so odds are the fuel is increased when it reaches up near 6000.

even if it did add a tiny bit more fuel at 6000, thats not gonna make the motor bog. I mean, I ran a gsr ecu with a stock d16z6 motor with no problems or bogging. Also you have to remember, he said he had no problems with that setup before the dist. change so we know the wcu combo has to be working.

I don't understand how this got off in the weeds. Regardless of what combination he has, it DID work before, and now it doesn't. The only thing changed per his post was the distributer. Blaming other stuff isn't in context. Maybe a hose came off, or something else broke, but if the computer worked before, it hasn't "changed it's mind" about the engine, right?

The obvious question is, was the correct distributer installed? All the connectors to it plugged in and seated?

Kamin is right. I was running a P72 on my b16...it bogs when VTEC engages, and then doesn't really pick up until 5.5-6k.

My thought is a GSR will be moving a good amount more air then a b16 in that rpm range...thus, the GSR is setup to inject more fuel. Too much for a b16, so your mixture is really rich, leading to reduced power.

Plus.....air velocity may have a large influence here as well....air velocity in a b16 is going to be lower in the midrange due to the fact it has wider, shorter intake runners, with no secondary butterflies to keep the velocity up the cylinders don't get filled properly.

Kamin is definitely 100% right on.
Had the same exact problem with my p72. Bogging at 4400 when vtec kicked in up until around 5700 and then it would take off.
Threw a hyperducktuning.com chipped P28 in there and WOOHOO!!!

I personally thought the p72 ECU on my b16 had good top end once it got past the bog. I ran my personal best time of 15.3 with the p72 infact.

i remember my buddy had one of those old fields vtec controllers..We tried the vtec at 4500 and it bogged alot.We were only able to get a good crossover at 5200 at the lowest rpm.Im sure the stock gsr vtec crossover is like around 4400 or something....right?

i checked everything, and still the same, even used someone else's distrib. but the same. before the car did feel funny around 4.4 but that was usual because the crossover was too low, but w/ my problem now, it just feels sluggish all through out the power band (4.4 and above) i have good low end torque (for some odd reason) but up top still feels fishy, i don't know what to do anymore, ERRRR!!!

Maybe the vtec is just not working at all? Are all the vital sensors hooked up to make the vtec work and are you sure your oil pressure is good? Maybe its time to get back to basics instead of trying to figure out which ecu is better.
