Default Effects of a poor ground engine ground ?

I am wondering the effects of a poorly grounded engine . I am refering to the ground wire that is usualy from the valve cover to the front core support ?

when i did the headgasket on my old d16 i didnt attach the lead to the block, thus driving home my gauge cluster would flicker on and off. once parked at my house i came back outside and the whole car was filled with smoke, poped my hood and disconected the battery, turned out my engine decided to ground through the spedometer cable, it melted the back of the cluster and burned the dash harness doing so... allways propperly ground your engine...

does anyone else have somthing similar that happened from a bad ground ?

that ground can be removed without problems, but the main ground to trans and frame needs to be there.. but the more the better.
