Default ECU Question

If I'm correct there is always a little power running to the ECU even when is turned of on normal street cars. On our race car I have the ECU hooked up to the switch panel, which is turning the ECU on and off. Is that bad for it, do I need to hook to up to the battery to have power to it all the time?
