Default ECU Problem?

After a few days at the shop, they told me I need a new ecu. My car idles extremely funny, it reves high and low. After it idles for about 20 seconds, the rpm's dropped and then shut off. Then, it takes several tries and time to have it start again. I could smell gas and other funny stuff. Is this a possiblility of a new ecu?

It very well could be somehthing in the ECU, a friend of mine screwed up one day when he was learning to chip an ECU and it caused all sorts of erratic behavior.

I don't know if this might help you, but I had something of a simalar problem. My car would take several tries to start and when started would idle up and down then just shut off. I finally put a scannner on it and found out my ECT sensor was bad. That fixed my problem.
