Im changin the front disk rotors and pads on my 97 civic ex, wondering if the back shoes are needed as well, or are they a much less frequent thing needed?

If the last time they were replaced was when you had your front brakes replaced, then they'll still be ok.
Otherwise, you should have a look, I'm not sure what the minimum size should be though.
