Default doing motor swap without a hoist?

anyone have a writeup or good tips on how to pull the motor from the bottom (guess that would be "dropping the motor"). i have pulled a motor before, but this time it will be in a pretty small garage (about 10x20 i think, car will be a CRX and/or civic 4dr).
help would be appreaciated thanks!

I would suggest getting some cinder blocks or thick pieces of wood if you are going to drop the engine because it's obviously at going to have to clear the bumper. Off hand I cannot recall the name of those carts used to roll oneself back and forth from under the car. Wood or metal board on wheels, maybe placing that or a palette under the car and pulling it from under the car. I also suggest removing the hood so that you can get more leverage to place rope around the engine to guide it down.

Ive done several swaps and imho its easier w/out a hoist. Get yourself 2 good hydro jacks and some decent jackstands. I used cardboard to help move the motor around once its off the pallet. The cardboard also prevents scratches on the oil pan. One swap that I did alone, my mom helped me. Thats how easy it is.

You can find a hoist for a little over 100 bucks.. and once you have it, it's all gravy.

i used a hydro jack, had my car lifted on the jack stands and slid my old engine out, not a problem.

k, so basicly i put something down that has wheels on it (a creeper/skateboard), unbolt the engine and have it sit on the thing with wheels. jack up the car about 2.5feet and slide the engine out? sound about right? is getting the engine back in just about as easy? probly need to jack up each side of the engine to get the motor mount bolts in right? and not having the crossmember probly helps too? am i on the right track here???

You shouldnt need to jack up the motor to get it into the mounts. Simply lower the car on top of the motor. Line up the mounts and thats it.

definitely easier w/o a hoist , jack the car up as high as you can and slide that baby outta there , if you cant lift the car high enuff to do that then take the head off ,that'll save you a few inches and weight when moving the thing

Me and my buddy just mounted some chains to the engine (where you would bolt up the hoist) And looped them over a 2x4 and muscled it out.

if you are going under the crx you would have the remove the crossmember. its easier to pull it out off top. you can rent hoists for like 23 bux 1 day
