does it work if your popping a knock sensor code??

USDM cars must be different to JDM cars because if my car throws any sort of code and the CEL comes on then VTEC wont engage and the rev limiter comes in at 6000rpm.

not true
cetran codes throw the ecu into limp mode. (the 6000 limit)
if you unplug somthing like the knock sensor vtec will still work.
