does check engine light take away power
If the CEL comes on and goes away, it's an intermittent fault and in most cases will not affect performance. However, the cause should be investigated and corrected.
If the CEL is on constantly, the engine is running in open loop or 'limp' mode. Basically, the ECU relies on a base fuel/timing/ect. map and does not correct for ambient operating conditions. In this mode, as 'limp' implies, you are not running at optimum fuel efficieny or power. I don't know if you can quantify the decrease to a simple 75% though. A lot of factors are involved.

depends on what the CEL code is. You're car won't be able to get data from that sensor and therefore unable to use that input to change the injector pulse width.

there was a post recently about codes, all of them. just jump the check terminals near the ECU, and get the code. unless its OBDII and u have access to a computer checker thing. or even if u have acces to a crucially expensive OBDI computer with the right connector plugs.

so basically it does affect performance. Not always but usually. Well i know someone that has a 2001 Prelude. It's got the usual i/h/e and a V-AFC. Sometimes the check engine light comes on and sometimes it doesen't. What's up with that

OBD2 cars have the service jumper connector too.

OMG!
you are ALL wrong!
the CEL is 1/4w bulb MAX!
it would draw less than 100mA when it is on.
it would take away virtually no power!!!
hth,
t..
find out the code & get back to us (pls start a new thread
), or take it to the dealer and get it looked at...

ok here's the situation. Every since my friend got the V-AFC installed and tuned, everynow and then the check engine light comes on. But the mechanic said this would happen. Something because it's OBD2 and not OBD1. So he said when ever it comes on just unplug the negative from the battery and it will go away. This does work but it comes back everynow and then. But then we raced and his light was on and we were just curious if that takes away power or anything.
