Default DIY spring compressor

I have done my suspension and many others many times, always using air tools. I no longer have tools and i am putting a set of Tein basic dampners on this week. The problem is i need my stock top hats and i dont know ow to get them off the compresed spring unit? any ideas? vice grips? anything? Whenever i have done it before i have not got the flying spring of death every one is talking about is just but like 2 feet on the olympic distances every one makes it out to be.

I have a set that I rented from Autozone. You basically buy the spring compressor from them and when you're done you just return them. If you want to buy your own set, Harbor Freight sells a set for $10.

I have spring compressors, but I'm lazy sometimes, and since most lowering springs don't need to be compressed to be installed, you only need to compress the stock ones to disassemble, I put the spring assembly in an old futon mattress, folded it over, put the impact gun on the top nut, sat on it and pulled the trigger, works fine, no damage, and it disassembled in an instant.

the one i rented from autozone didnt work for me. the hooks that go around the spring were too big and didnt allow for the shock to fit up the center. i had the same problem w/ the HF compressor when i tried to put the stock sus back on. i ended up unbolting the hats till they popped off.

i cant remember if it was the fronts or rears, but one of them is only slighty preloaded. the others flew across the driveway and landed in the middle of the yard. btw, just the hat, washer and bushing pop off, the spring pretty much stayed around the shock. oh, and this was integra sus.

this is what i did i took the wheel off and took the bottom bolt for the shock off that one that holes the shock to the lower control arm. then i put a car jack under it and compress it alittle go on top loosen the nut on top of the shock that holds the spring let the jack down a bit to let the spring out as much as it can dont take it off now cut the spring and it will release all the tension then take the top nut off and the shock and whats left of the spring will come right out. i wouldn't cut the spring all the way but cut like just enough that the spring dont come loose and hit it with a hammer or pry it till it breaks caz u dont want the spring to let go when ur cuttin.
