Default DIY injector cleaning??

HEY

I searched and i found a couple threads that explain how to clean your own injectors when they are out of your car. they say to hook up a hose to one end @ 40 psi from an air compressor and then hook up the electrical clip to it with a 12 volt battery source to open them up and blah blah blah... you can look it up if you want to.

My idea is leaving them on the fuel rail and still hooked up electrically to your car's wiring harness which includes the resistor box. and then squirting injector cleaner down them and spraying them all while they are still hooked up to the fuel rail. you would pull the fuel rail out of the IM of course and then lift them up a little bit and cover your motor so nothing gets on anything important...

So would that idea work?? what should i watch out for when I try this? I am going to pull the plug on the fuel pump and unbolt the fuel off of the rail. but then could i fill up the fuel rail with injector cleaner and then hook up 40 psi onto the rail???

thanks guys

What to watch out for? A spark, if the cleaner is flamable.

BTW, how do you intend to cycle the injector coils if they are still connected to a non-running engine?

You could always turn the key on, remove the distributor and spin it by hand. That should pulse the injectors... The only thing that would suck about that is having to refill the fuel rail with injector cleaner every time it runs dry. I'd probably run 3-4 fuel rails full at least. and you'd have to rig your air supply onto the rail somehow. It beats paying OTC 300 some dollars for a fuel injector cleaner setup.

yea that is what i thought about was some kind of rig for the air... and what makes them cycle?

The distributor turning makes the ECU think the engine is running, so it'll distribute spark and injector pulse. Unless you have a crank sensor, in which case you'd probably have to wire up each injector individually and pulse it manually.

The least expensive method I use for cleaning injectors is to go to your local drug store and pick up a dental ultrasonic cleaner under $30.00 or borrow moms jewellery ultrasonic cleaner, she will still love you. Go to Chevron and purchase a bottle of Techrolene (SP). Go by the grocery store and purchase a can of tuna, lettuce, jar of mayo and some cheap white Wonder bread. Fill the ultrasonic cleaner with the solvent to a level that will only submerge the tips of the injectors, up to the normal position of the sealing O-ring. Take a break, toast up the bread and make up a tuna sandwich. Use the cleaned out tuna can and punch four holes in the bottom to stand your injectors in. Place the can holding the injectors in the bottom of the ultrasonic cleaner; do not submerge the electrical connections. Turn the cleaner on; you can leave the injectors soaking 10 to 15 min, to soften stubborn deposits before power cycling. Pulse, cycle the injectors by connecting the injectors electrical connection to a 12-volt DC power source, less than 2 amps or even a small 9-volt transistor radio battery and cycle the power on and off. Like Ive stated it is very important to not let the current run through the injector solenoid coil more than a short period, should be cycled on no more than a second, use an inline switch or you will over heat the coil and ruin the injector. Not required but you electrical and pluming guys can use a switching IC for cycling and a fuel pump to flow cleaner through the injectors. Cleaning time 5-8 min. If you need more details let me know!

You will ruin the injector if you just hook a power supply to the injector. What you need to do is have some means of turning the power on and off going to the injector to simulating the conditions it sees while in the car. The wire coil inside the injector can only withstand being powered up for short time periods, in the car the ECU pulses the current being sent to the injectors.

goddamnit that sounds like a pain in the *** especially because I don't have any of that stuff!

I guess maybe i will try that idea though stated above... so would AA batteries work? how many amps do they put out? and does it have to be a 12 volt source?

That may work to at least some extent, but I feel it's better to have a pressurized flow going through the injector. Some of the varnish and debris buildup will be in the inlet screen and area behind the pintle, which wouldn't really be cleaned with that method. Perhaps doing this method first and pressure cleaning afterwards would make for more of a complete job.

In case you have not considered this,
The injectors being bolted to the intake is what
holds them in the fuel rail under pressure..

If you pressurize the fuel rail and injectors off the intake,
You are going to have to improvise a way to keep the injectors
in the rail..

hmm yea that is a good thought i didn't think about. I am thinking it is not clogged injectors because it won't even start and i heard even with clogged injectors it will run, but run shitty. i popped them out and they weren't even that dirty, so I am thinking it must be the gas being bad. I put 1/2 a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in my gas and I am just gonna keep trying to start it until I give up. thanks for the good consideration though 88dxcrx

this is what i do get a 9 volt battery some spray carb cleaner a injector clip and some wire 14 gauge will do and amomentary switch hook the the injector clip to the injector run some 14 gauge wire to a 9 volt battery( depending if they are low or high inpendence) put a momentary switch inline wear gogles as the you spray the carb cleaner with the little red jet tube it comes with will spray all over now stick the carb cleaner tube in the inlet side of the injector hit the momentary switch and spray the carb cleaner at the same time i usualy put a white rag under to see what comes out dont leave the switch on for to long at a time
