I pull axles all the ******* time. It takes like ten minutes.

Step 1: Car on jackstands
Step 2: Drain tranny fluid
Step 3: Remove wheel
Step 4: Remove thru-bolt that attaches shock to control arm
Step 5: Un-stake and remove axle nut (impact gun needed)
Step 6: Un-pin and remove castle nut on ball joint
Step 7: Pop ball joint (do a search on this)
Step 8: Remove axle (you may need to put a prybar in between the axle and tranny to wiggle the axle out)

So that makes a total of three whole bolts. Not hard by any means.

do you have an air compressor?
you will need a 32mm inoact socket. get it at autoparts store
you can get an impact at sears or harbor freight.

you do not have to drain the tranny fluid.

tranny fluid change is as easy as the oil change. instead you feed the oil with a pump.

my first time doing the axle change is with the help of my friend. always have a buddy who is at least semi-mechanically inclined. took us an hour to figure everything out. trying to do it step by step. just try and do it at your pace. i'm sure your not trying to beat a world record

you dont need to drain the tranny fluid as only a little will come out when you pull hte axles out. and its fairly simple.

Don't drain the tranny fluid.
You will need a good impact gun or a good air compressor.
I had to pump mine up to 140 psi before the nut would come off

btw it's takes longer than 10 minutes if you are working at home.

5-10 minutes to find all the tools you need an turn on the air compressor
5 minutes to jack the car up and put it on stands, and take the wheels off.
30 seconds to try to take off the shock fork bolt.
30 seconds to realize you need a short impact socket or a universal joint
1 minutes to find the correct impact joint or shorty
5 seconds to realize you need a wrench on the nut on the other side.
1 minute to get up off the ground and find the wrench
20 seconds to 1 hours to **** and moan about the axle nut and wait for the compressor to pump up some more and try squirting WD40 all over the nut.
5 minutes to get on honda-tech to find alternatives to removing axle nut
30 minutes to post & read posts of a "GODAMN AXLE NUT WON'T COME OFF THREAD"
2 minutes to wack the hell out of the lower ball joint
2 minutes to remove axles
1 minutes to get up and get new axles
1 minute to get tranny side in,
5-10 minutes to line up splines on hub side
15 minutes to bolt everything back up put the tire on and put the car back on the ground.

Bottom line expect at LEAST 30 minutes a side for axle install, but it could take longer

BTW.... DONT USE A 32mm 12 point chrome socket. IT WONT WORK. you need a 32mm 6 point IMPACT SOCKET

you don't need an impact gun, use a breaker bar

if you dont have air, break the axle nut loose while the car is still on the ground. depending on your wheels, it should be right there. get a breaker bar and hop on it. wahlaa
for the ball joint, you are gonna need a ball joint splitter OR hit it REALLY F'N HARD on the side of the hub or lca and it will eventually pop off

no..a ball joint splitter destroys your ball joint and you'll need a new one. didnt anybody teach you the double hammer technique?? i'll teach all of you for 5 bux each...it'll save tons of headaches and cash....................

just kidding...

heres how you do it.

to get the lower ball joint to pop out take off the bolt that holds the fork to the lower control arm so that the lower control arm can swing down freely.

take off the castle nut that has a cotter pin in it and of course...you take out the cotter pin out first...duh

when you get the nut off thread it back on just a tad bit so the lower control arm doesnt fly off when you knock it loose.

now you'll need two hammers. one goes on each side of the ball joint. you might need a buddy for this so yeah...grab your sister, brother, friend, **** buddy, dad, mom, grandma, or grampa...yeah you get the idea. All they need to do is hold one hammer up to the ball joint so that when you whail on the other side their hammer bounces away. have them hold it there while you hit it and it should pop out..trust me, it works wonders. if not, keep going until you knock it loose...

the other way is to use a pickle fork and stick it between the ball joint and lower control arm then hit the end of that with a hammer, but i'd only recommend this if you're replacing the worn out ball joint...well, try it and have fun...this technique has saved me tons of time and money...

You guys are lame. Here's how you pop a ball joint:

1. Jack the wheel up as high as it will go.

2. Place a 1/2" rachet handle between the control arm and steering knuckle.

3. Remove the jack and let the wheel back down.

That's it. No hitting anything with hammers, no special tools, and no ripped boots. Plus it takes less than a minute to do.

For a good explanation of how this method works, do a search.

Lol, YOU CAN'T BREAK A PIECE OF SOLID STEEL BY PINCHING IT! Trust me, this is the method that everyone uses, even Honda techs.

It's not physically possible guys. Either you're doing something terribly wrong, or we're talking about different things here.

You don't even need the use the double hammer method. just get one big *** hammer, and give it a good strong whack.

These also work well for separating ball joints; cheap too:
