Default Distributor Position Help. TDC

I'm finishing up the last few things on my rebuild and i need help with the distributor position.

the cams/pistons/timing belt are all at Top Dead Center and this is what the place where the dizzy bolts up to the cam looks like (notice it is pointing straight up and down):

According to my Haynes manual (pictured below) the #1 cylinder firing position should be pointing northwest.

but when i position the cap like shown in the manual, the male end of the dizzy is pointing east to west like this:

when i position the male of the dizzy up and down to mate with the cam, the cap is posistioned in the #2 or #4 position like this:

or

sorry it the description is confusing, i tried to explain it the best i could with the pictures. thanks in advance.

up- down is the right way

the slots on the housing and gear are there to be matched.

The slot in the cam and the tang on the dist. are offset. Figure the offset and install the dist. Wherever the rotor points is CYL #1 Looking at the dist. the next terminal (clockwise) is #3, then #4, Then #2. plug up the wires.
