that is some wierd ****! I just put a D15b into a 96 civic, and I am using a jumper harness and a P28, obviously the 3 stage VTEC won't work unless you are using the proper ECU, what is the ECU code for the 3 stage VTEC? I guess I will have to tear the valve cover off of that motor when I get to the shop today! I wonder if ALL of the D15b's are this "3 stage VTEC"?? Interesting. Thanks Matt.

d15b should only come in jdm civics in certain years and only way to telll is the engine code if there is no numbers after the d15b its jdm and prolly 3 stage
3 stage vtec was called VTEC-E.......the site aboves info seems wrong, 3 stage vtec is the same as VTEC-E and they claim it produces 128bhp which is wrong, it only produces 92bhp and its purely an economy thing and has no performance attributes at all. Theyre available here in europe, i have driven one and they are the deadest/slowest honda i have ever driven, they take for ever to get to 60 and are just about flat out at 80mph. the engine that produces 128bhp is found in the jdm VTi and it is certainly not economical, they are actually more thirsty than my B18C integra!!

it isn't vtec-e its a combo vtec-e and normal sohc vtec read the site that i posted the link to and read the vtec-e summary
In short, it combines VTEC-E and SOHC VTEC to get both extraordinarily good RPM fuel economy, and excellent high RPM power. The D15B is a 1.5L engine that is capable of about 54mpg and is rated for about 128HP

You should read it again closely, The D15B 3-stage has TWO VTEC solenoids. So to see if you have one, just look there. You DON"T need to look internally. And NO all D15B's are NOT 3 stage VTEC, it is slighty rare.
JDM and EDM Civic's EX's or equivalents only, I believe, and only for two years. '96-'97?? or '97-'98??
I should read it closer as well.
