Default CTR or not

My friend bought a JDM Gsr with CTR cams and cam gears. What is the easiest way to tell if they are actually CTR cams and not something else?..................thanks

Well there was a site that had very detailed pics of the different Honda Vtec cams, but the one I had bookmarked is now a dead link. I suggest searching the net, someone else must have this posted. I recall they had different #s of rings around one end. I was worried about the same thing when I bought some used ITR cams, and I verified them with the # of rings.

Is there a way to tell without the cam being out of the car

Well you wouldn't necessarily have to remove the cam from the car, but you'd likely have to remove the valve cover and perhaps the distributor for positive ID. Do it the next time you set your valve lash.

I believe the marking are right at the distributor slot on the intake cam. You'll almost certainly have to remove the distributor to see them.

there's really no way to tell if you have 'R' cams while they're on the car, its very hard to tell. the only real way is to take the cam journals off the distributor-side(s) of the camshaft's to see the markings.

btw. I have updated pics I took of 'R' cams, and I'll be redoing my VTEC cam spec page soon.

I would suggest NOT to take the cams out if you've never taken them out before and have no knowledge of doing so. Although, you could have someone who has experience in B-series engines, supervise you.
