Could it be a problem with tranny? or clutch? HELP!!
ABout 6 mos ago I bought an 88 crx si, the guy that I bought it from told me that he had replaced the clutch about a year ago, the car now has 140,000 miles. The problem that Im having is that when I attempt to put the car in reverse, it is difficult to do and it makes a grinding noise, I release and engage the clutch twice, then it will go into reverse smoothly, when I am driving the clutch never slips, it is really strong, it feels like its new, I am just wondering what it could possibly be. Could a servicing of the tranny help, I was thinking it could possibley be the synchros. Not too sure. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I dont want to take it to anyone to check it because its too expensive, and I do all the work myself. Just looking for some pointers as to what it might be.
Edit: added, my clutch pedal is pretty stiff, could that just be that it need adjusting? Sometimes I have a problem puting it in first when im at a light, or if I down shift from say like 4th to 3rd, it doesnt want to go in, I have to push the clutch in a couple times.
Thanks

For one thing, reverse does not have synchros. Grinding going into reverse, after giving everything a few seconds to spin down, means the clutch is not releasing enough for the input shaft to stop. If double pumping the clutch helps, that means the clutch is not releasing fully. Does it have a cable or hydraulic type? If cable, check the adjustment and consider replacing the cable. When they have trouble releasing, it usually means they are starting to fray and stretch. If it's hydraulic, flush out the fluid and bleed it. If that does not work, then check the slave and master cylinders.
If that does not work, then it's time to look at the clutch. Some people's new clutches are not the same as others. If the flywheel was not resurfaced or the pressure plate or throwout bearing were not replaced, or the parts not lubed properly, that could be the problem.
