Could this damage my cam gears?
I am trying to remove my cam gears from the cams. I want to clamp the gears down in a vice so that I can remove the bolt, but I am worried about bending them. Are they strong enough to be clamped down in a vice and not get damaged? Has anyone ever had problems with this?
clamp the gear in a vice just don't tighten it too hard, it should be fine. using an impact wouldn't hurt anything unless the cam gear went flying out of the vice and the cam got dinged up. just use a hand wrench.
If your going to lock her into a vice, make sure you wrap'er a few times with a shop towel/rag first. To make sure that you don't leave any vice imprints or scratch any of the surfaces of the cam while wrenching. I wouldn't bother with an impact for those bolts, there is no need.....ratchet works just fine!
Well, I tried using a vice and I couldn't get the bolt loose. I had the vice as tight as I could get it, and the gear kept slipping. I think I am going to try an impact wrench now. Do people do this without damaging the cams?
