Snapped cam gear bolt in the cam. Now what. :(
So I was putting my cam gear on and I was told go ahead and use an impact. On top of it all its a cheapo electric one but it managed to snap the bolt so now part is stuck inside the cam.
How do I get it out now?

use a needle nose it a lil par is hanging out once u remove the cam cap. or use a screw driver (flat head) and hit the top of the bolt to dent it so that u can unsrew it with the screw driver. if all else fails you can drill it or take it to a machine shop. good luck

first drop kick whoever told you to impact that. my solution woul be to try and drill it out and use an e z out. sounds like its pretty tight though.

:S I dont understand how it would crack the cam...but ok. There is none of the bolt sticking out. I just drilled a small whole in it now. Im hoping Ill be able to get it out with a bolt extractor tommorow.

cams are very fragile hardened metal. i wouldn't use the cam with out getting it magnaflux checked. 99.9% chance they will tell you not to use the cam.

yeahp.
NEVER use an impact on camshafts.
'Flux it or replace it.

My engine builder/ machinist said not to worry about it...now Im not sure what to do. I dont have the time or tools at this point to pull the head apart. Its not the $$ for the part Im worried about since I already have a spare. I just have to pay somone to do the labour.
If it were to snap would I risk damaging by pistons as well?

More so your valvetrain than your pistons.
If you're not confident in yourself and you've already spent a lot of money on the head I'd take it to a shop. I'm in the same prediciment (only mine involves a transmission). They'll do the work faster than you can, which means less downtime, and you know that the job will be done correctly.

Think about it this way. You don't snap a bolt when using a torque wrench to tighten it. Obviously you went pass the torque spec, unless the bolt was severly rusted, butt hen again why would you use it again?? Other than cracks somewhere in/on the camshaft, the threads on the camshaft for the cam bolt could be damaged and under load fail somehow. I wouldnt risk it, especially if its your daily driver
