Coolant lines smell of exhaust
I'm not sure how you can smell exhaust gasses in you coolant lines but look for coolant in your oil, they are different thickness and I don't think they will mix, that’s the most accurate way to check for a cracked cylinder wall, to check if the rings are bad just do a compression test. I saw you post in a diff thread and you said that you think you have a crack, just look for disappearing coolant, and smoking from exhaust, I think it would be a white smoke, blue is oil right? any one wants to correct me if I’m wrong?! if compression is about the same in all cylinders no smoking and coolant lever is constant you are fine. When I pulled my head I saw veridical lines in my cylinder walls but that was just marks that the tips of piston rings make as they go up and down.
Well theres no coolant in the upper rad hose, and so i smelled in there... smelled like exhaust.
I cant do a compression test just yet, the timing belt isnt on the car. I can however do a leakdown test, which I will do tomrrow.
There is no smoke coming from the exhaust... however i do replace my coolant often, but that might be due to the fact it all goes to the damn overflow tank when i boost.
you say oil in coolant, or coolant in oil? My oil does look a little chocolate milk like. Definately not a deep dark color, looks milky. Is this a sign of coolant in my oil?
there is no oil in my coolant though.
thanks for your help

Oil mixed with water will come out looking like light chocolate milk ther was a thread about that and the "stuff" looked like dirty milk. doo a compression test and see how much they wary, my jdm gsr did 210-220psi.
yes then there is definately coolant in my oil. Is this solely from a crack in the clyinder wall, or would a headgasket or blown rings do this also?
cant do a compression test cause i cant get the stupid timing belt back on right... but I did do a leakdown test.
I dont have a gauge to see how much air escapes, but I was able locate the leaking air. In one clyinder, I felt air bubbles in the upper radiator hose, and could hear bubbles in liquid.
in all of the clyinders, I plugged the valve cover breather with my finger, and could feel the air building up inside. When I released my finger there was a considerably large whoosh of air.
does this help any? narrow down the cause?
leakdown test:
hear bubbles in coolant.
significant amount of blowby, out the valve cover breather.
definately coolant in oil

A leaking head gasket is definitely more likely than a crack in your cylinder wall. Both would make similar signs, i say take the head off and check the cylinder walls or actually you would have to take it to a machine shop and check the cylinder walls and check the head for warping and mill it a little just to be safe.

thank you. headgasket just came in the mail, i will rip the head off next weekend or the next, im never home to work on the damn thing.
I did get the head milled last time and i remembered to torque them in the correct sequence and the correct specs.
Thanks for the help, ill keep you updated.
