Confused about the H world...
so i have been researching an engine swap for my ek hatch now for about 6 months(only had the car for 3). here is my question...if the h series motors are so powerful and cheap then why does everyone go b series? is it due to the ease of the swap or is there reasons i can't see. sorry if this is a noob question...just want some straight answers before i lay down the cash. thanks
One thing a lot of people are concerned about is the extra weight of the H22. Plus, if you plan on building up your motor, theres a lot more after-market backing for the B series engines.
the h series definitely looks much bigger...are the real numbers much bigger too? with that much hp does the extra weigh really matter? 200Hp 161Trq just sounds sick to me...how much would you really have to do to it. i keep hearing horror stories about the install though?!?!
I heard that the H22 is about 100lbs. heavier than B16. Installation can't be too much hard if you buy one of the mountiong kits from hasport or place.
slomofo, he do it himself or did a shop do it? i do not have the know how or the tools to do it so i will have to take it to a shop and DONT want to pay as much for the install as i did for the motor. is the swap in an ek? i would love to see some pics if it is.
There are a few issues with the H22.
First off, the mounts have to be custom....600 dollars from place racing.
Then the axles which must be custom as well another 300.
Next up, the trannies are not direct link they are cable shifters. Therefore you must also modify the shifter housing (time consuming pain in the ***)
But, when it all comes down to it, you will spend about the same money on a H22 install as you would on a B18C1 AND have 100 lbs more in the front with about 30 more whp and 25 more ft-lbs. With no real aftermarket options.
I would pick the 22 for a daily driver that wasn't for performance and go with a 18 for the track/autox.
Since I want to do both daily and track, I am going with a B18C5...waiting longer to save the money (3 years
)
However, I have been reading/studying/asking/answering about this **** for the past 1 and a half years. The better bang for the buck is an inexpensive JDM B18C (GS-R) for $2,700.
Let alone you aren't even considering the possiblity that you may want to replace some parts to be on the safe side....clutch, timing belt, water pump, and it wouldn't hurt to do all the gaskets either....better to do it now then after you spend all that time putting that sucker in there and have to take it back out.
My $0.02

Spade...that was exactly the explaination i was looking for. clear and to the point. now my only question is where are you getting a c1 for $2700?!?!?! if i could find a deal like that i would be all over it. thanks a lot...might be saving a little longer.

JUST A FYI the H22A block, doesn't weight 100lbs more, is close to be 15lbs more, something you can just fix putting a CF hood or any other lightweight thing on your car

I'm sure that once you incorperate the head, tranny, and other parts into it, the weight difference is a little more than 15 lbs.

I can't seem to find the post on the guy that actually weigh both engines, he said that the difference wasn't much and that with some weigh reducers all could be the same weight
