Default Checking Block for problems

I'd like to know what tests I can perform on my own to check and see if a block is ok? I bought a B18A Block with 70,000 miles on it and that shi* was so heavy. Its now sitting in my basement and I dont want to bring it back up and throw it in my trunk to go on a mission and look for a machine shop. I Know I can check to see if the top of the block is warped or not. What other tests can I do to see if its ok? How do I check the cylinder sleeves and the rest of the block for any other problems?

make sure your cylinders arent cracked....crank should spin fairly easy with the head removed or spark plugs removed. dont spin it too much though! check the oil in the engine already.....and see if there's anything metalic in the oil-this could mean that your bearings are bad, along with your crank journals. thats all i can think of right now.

goodluck

so you would be able to see cracks in the cylinder walls? There is no oil in this engine. Its just the block, crank and a few other stuff.

I have no clue how heavy it is. It took me and my brother to take it to the basement. I might have to bring it back up and put it in the garage when I make space. By then i should have most of the parts and the building will begin. I just wanted to know how I could check the block myself without having to take it to a machine shop.

Many future problems can stem from microscopic cracks that will break under pressure. Finding some history on the motor will help you alot. If it was running good when it was removed it will probably be ok. If you're going for a budget build at least thoroughly look it over and plastigage the main/rod bearings to make sure it won't self destruct. If you're going to spend significant $$ than I would reccommend that a machine shop prep your block to do it right.

thanks for the info. I dont have pistons yet so I doubt I need a pastigauge to check the bearings. I'll be getting new bearings. If anyone else has an idea please post it in the thread. Thanks!
