check engine light...unable to diagnose...S2000...ideas?
I have an '01 S2000 with about 17K miles. Chaek engine light has been on and off for the past few weeks. On for a few days...off for a few days. Got the car to the dealer. After 2 days, the dealer has decided it is "bad gas". I might accept this diagnosis if it were not for the following. I have put gas in the car several times at several different gas stations over the course of this problem. I always run the tank to empty and always fill it to the top. Any similar problems or ideas?
I frequent s2ki.com a lot and have read about a lot of MAP sensors being faulty...that is a possibility. Is the car running poorly? I must be honest in saying I don't agree with the dealer sentiment that it is bad gas...I mean as long as you are using premium, there shouldn't be a problem.
BTW, I am in Raleigh...have a GSR, but am hoping to acquire a Stook in the very near future.

The invoce lists the following: Scanned system for codes P0301-P0304. Reset and codes came back. an Diag test and consulted tech line on 4 occasions. Test fuel presre, map sensor, inspected plugs, coils and injectors. Performed cyl leak down test. inspected data from sensor for accuracy. Used another car for sensor comparison. Disconected fuel supply and ran car on fuel injectcleaner, then ran on bottled gas. Added cleaner to tank. Test drove and ran out of gas in car and then added gas. Problem went away...unwanted fuel mixture...added 44K to remaining fuel...
I will be honest, no of this means much to me....One last thing, I was charged for an Induction Kit - Part Number OBG135. Any idea what this is and why I would need one? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Car is running strong as ever. If not for the light, I would not have had any reason to take it in for service.
Thanks for the tip on the MAP Sensor. I will look into that.
One tip for you, if you do get an S2000, stay away from Crown. When I bought the car, I had to tell them about it. They have no idea what they have.

If the car runs smooth and the light comes on almost instantly after clearing it I would suspect a crank trigger or something feeding wrong information to the ecu. It is possible that your engine isn't misfiring at all. What rpm and vehicle speed does this occur? (freze data is helpful). Most of the people at my shop are parts hangers with no diagnostic abilities- this seems to be the case for most dealers. I wish I could help-

Majority of the 072 ( performance not affected) can be be related to software problems within the ecu.. I have consulted w/ the Honda Tech line on many of occassions with this issue on every Honda vehicle ( mostly Passports).. Its seems that we have come to an agreement that problems have been occuring w/ the hardware programming .. step #1 for me would be to dis-connect power to the ecu and let it "re-learn" itself.. clearing the codes w/ a diagnostic tester will not do this.. This has solved MANY of my stubborn problems.....
I agree that Freeze data could give you some Idea why your misfires are happening. An ECU reset may have cleared it up by resetting you Long term fuel trim too. Was it ever flashing when it was on? I had one in the other day with around 15K on it and some hack shop adjusted the valves too tight. Ran great but had a P0301,2,3,and 4. just some suggestions. I havent had to replace a MAP sensor yet.
I'll have to agree with the junk part- I don't see how they call that a scope. I could chart faster with a pencil and paper.
Gang-
Thanks for all the input. Much appreciated.
The light does not flash. Just comes on solid when I start it. Then maybe a day later, when I start it, the light does not come on. Never felt any decreased performance, low power, rought idle or miss firing. To me, the untrained driver, it feels great. Starts right up, idles around 1000RPM and takes off like a rocket. It still performes like a champ.
I will try to get some more info out of the tech. Unfortunatly, the service manager is no longer returning my calls.
Again, thanks for the insight.

keep trying different dealerships til you find one that knows what they are doing. Sounds like you went to my dealership. I have had to tell them how to fix things. The BEST dealership which is now 800 miles from me is Nelson Honda in El Monte California. They know what is up. Take a road trip to get your car fixed right.
Tomm, I noticed that you're in Greensboro. Have you tried anybody in the Triangle? Crown Honda - Volvo in Chapel Hill does a lot of my work. Specifically, Steve Upchurch. The guy's great, does work on the side (using Honda's bays, tools, lifts, etc....). If you haven't tried going to them, I'd say give him a call, I've yet to have a problem with his work and he's saved me a ton of $. Crown's # is 919-929-0242
Good luck getting it figured out.
