Default engine check light problem

I was riding down the highway at about 100km/h, the engine check light came on.

Now when I start the car, the idle is low and shaking/rough. Now, ever since I got the car which was about 2 months ago (175K KM), I filled up on gas, since then, I never let the gas gauge go below the half point line - I'd always refill when it gets to the half point line. Would this influence the Engine light to come on? I heard something about bad gas can do this. Do you think I should drive out all the gas and do a refill with fresh gas and see what happens?

My mechanic moved away. I called this one guy he said he'd scan for 30$ (not free like in the US) and tell me which parts I need etc.

If anyone has any recommendations on mechanics or can help me out, I'm in the Brampton area, Ontario.

Thanks
