Charcoal canister
Would I see any benefit of replacing this thing? Does it even need to be replaced? It's just kind of a weird looking thing that I recently discovered in my engine so I don't really know much about it, thanks!

The only way for those vapors to get out is THRU the charcoal canister. It traps them since they 'count' as unburned HC.
When the engine runs it sucks a small amount of air thru the canister to burn the gas that's stored there.
Removing the canister isn't gonna get you any extra power. If it's cracked maybe you would replace it, because it needs to be airtight.
Is it doing something bad? Check-engine light? Or are you just curious what that canister is good for?
