Default car acting up this morning

when i started my car to go to work it started up just like normal. then seconds later the car idle start going all crazy. jumping irradically! then it cut off. i tried to start it back up but took a while then it did the same thing agian and cut off. i had the key on the "on" position right before you turn it to start and the RPM needle was jumping around on its own.

theeeen when i finally got it to run and i was able to go......i started my way to work. while i was driving going about 45mph at about 3500 rpm the RPM needle dropped to zero and my car started to bog out then it caught up with itself and ran agian........WTF?

has this happened to anybody else and can someone tell if they have an idea of wat the problem is?

i gotta 97EX.

thanks.

Disconnect the IACV (idle air control valve) it is on the back of the intake manifold. Only have to disconnect the plug going into it. Then go and start the car and see if your idle still goes all nuts. If not then you IACV is bad. Once you get a new one you will have to pull the ECU fuse for 30 seconds to reset it and then start and let the engine run on it's own for about 10 minutes so the ECU can "learn" the engine and sensors again.

If not check the vaccum lines they may be decaying or "holy"

when i talk about the idle being all crazy i mean really crazy. the needle would drop to zero then back up to 2500 then down to 1000 then up to 3000. thats how crazy it is.

It does definatly sound like a sensor problem with the indicated or needed fpr a/f ratio. Like spade sayed, he mentioned one of your best resolutions, however are there any mods on your ignition, or fuel systems? how are your plug wires, and have you tested you o2 sensors?

Typically, a jumpy tach is the first sign of the ignitor or coil about to fail. A jumping needle when in the ON position without the engine even running would indicate an electrical problem... low voltage, poor ground, bad connection, etc.
