Can I use 16 gauge wire to redo my engine harness?
I want to redo my entire engine harness, and was wondering if I can get away with using 16 gauge wire. I know people have different opinions about using larger than stock wire, but I used 16 gauge to rewire my TPS, and it made a huge improvement in throttle response. I'd like to make a brand new 16 gauge harness. Who's done this and wants to give me some pointers?

****, I was wondering about the same thing, if 16 gauge would be okay to use. But I got speaker wires 16 gauge (stranded 2 conductor)... I'm sure I can split it into single wires.
Anyways. Hate that this is an old post & no answer, so my bad but anyone want to give me an input if its okay to use what I got? I have been looking around online but no info/answers

Re: Can I use 16 gauge wire to redo my engine harness?
So 16 gauge will do it just make sure to get "primary wire" which is like automotive wiring? Don't half *** it on any other kind! Anyways you can get some prices real cheap (better than Radioshack or corporate store prices) & free shipping from Amazon for about $13-14 bucks for 100ft!! That's more than enough. Heres a link for purchase & read the review pretty useful info

Also incase you wanted some more info heres something I got from looking up on CRX wire tucks (kinda confusing how he wrote it out) but at least its more info on the wiring info + heat shrinking (although no 16 gauge heat shrink tube size, wtf?)
"From what I hear, there are all different types of doing a wire tuck. The very first step to starting this project it to mark ALL wires. This one in particular took me 2-3days of solid work to get it done right. I just tucked the headlight, horn, multi-ground, radiator fan relay and wires, and side markers. Just as a suggestion though, this wiring tuck required about 5-6 feet of heat shrink and with my calculation it would have cost me $14.06 at 2.49(plus tax) per package (at 5 feet); $16.95(incl. tax), at 6 feet of heat shrink from my local Canadian Tire store. I bought 2x(5 foot) pieces of heat shrink tube for $5 from an electrical store, that I just cut to size. As well, on a side note, but very important, as a suggestion do not cut all wires from the passenger side grommet then re-solder them; rather, just cut the wires to be tucked. I did this because I was going to try to hide the engine harness connectors as well, but decided against that idea so now I am stuck with re-soldering the joints for absolutely no reason. Here is a list of supplies and tools needed:
-Soldering Iron
-Soldering wire and Flux
-5-6 feet of 1/8" heat shrink (for both the 18 and 20 gauge wire) *it will only work on 18 gauge if you slide the wires together rather than "pig-tailing" them together*
-1 foot of 3/8 heat shrink (for thicker 20 gauge wire)
-scissors (for cutting the heat shrink into the size you need)
-wire strippers
-electrical tape
-wire loom (for protection), and
-16 gauge, thickest wire used, (it is used on 1 wire to extend the heater wire); 18 gauge ,just a bit larger, than 20 gauge, (it is used for the headlights, horn, rad fan relay wires, multi-ground, and extension); and 20 gauge wire (this is thinner wire for your multi-ground wire, side markers, and extension pieces)"

Hope any of that helps you and anyone else looking for more 16 18 20 gauge wiring info, wire tucking supply's & tools, or just some random info you might of wanted to know... I'm sure there's better but its hard as **** to source! If anyone has something to input & share, please do!

you can but it has to be shielded wire. or else it can pick up interference and depending on what your wiring can be a nightmare.

Yeah i'm looking to pull my engine harness and headlight harness out and make them longer so i can tuck them. But what i'm wondering is would i pull the wire out of the connectors and put the new wire in there. If so is their a thread showing how to do so. if not do i just save some wire after cutting the connectors then adding on? i plan on using 16 gauge for the headlight harness an 18-20 gauge for the engine harness. Also the ecu harness i'd like more info on that to.
