Default cam install question

On this website:

http://www.evotuners.com/camgears.htm

There is a fairly simple description of how to remove/install cam gears.

One part of the description confuses me:

"Mark the timing belt at TDC (top dead center) and lock the tensioner so that it doesn't tighten up when you take the belt off the gears."

What is locking the tensioner, can any one explain this?

The tensioner is near the crank....it puts tension on the belts....think of a big bearing on a spring.

They mean to pull the tensioner back and lock it back so that the belt can slide off easily.

If you plan to replace the belt just cut it. If not make sure you mark which way the belt spun.

How does tension get applied to the belt? If you loosen the tensioner by turning it to the left the belt becomes more slack, correct? How does that work?

I don't really understand the spring/bearing thing, sorry

1. Ok, so when we pull that wrench straight down, what happens?
2. And how does one lock it?

Man that thing looks like a pain the *** to get to.

Heh ... this beats working!

It will swing away giving you slack to move the timing belt.

I have never bothered with them....had the engine out of the car.

Wow ... I just got it. That is so easy it makes perfect sense.

I should get the hammer for not understanding that.
