Default c.e.l...no code, mostly at night? wtf? then runs better?

B17 w/ '89 pr3 in 91 crx
all day, everyday driving all over town everything is usual (high idle...). Most nights I get a c.e.l. w/ minutes of starting my car, almost every time. I look at the ecu and the red light just stays on. This used to happen at first when I didn't have the intake air temp sensor hooked up (and it stopped when I fixed that). I don't have the 02 sensor connected (the engine seems to have a mild surging/bogging pattern to it at part throttle, so I unhooked the 02). Never had an 02 code yet. Anyways, the main problem is that when the light comes on, about half the time the engine will just die (going down the road, middle of an intersection...it doesn't care) and it seems like I have to wait atleast 30-45sec before trying to start it again. I don't understand why it is doing this to me. I'd hurt it if it were alive. I've also noticed that when the c.e.l. is on and it hasn't died, I have more low end torque and vtec always works (isn't it supposed to not work w/ cel on?). This is what bothers me more, is that it runs better w/ the light coming on, as long as it doesn't just flat out die. Any insight into this would be really cool.
