The check engine light seems to come on after a few minutes into a drive. When I turn the car off then turn to start agian to read the code it no longer shows up and I cannot figure out what is causing it. Nothing is running out of ordinary other then my idle surging occasionally. Car is a CRX Dx 1991 with DPFI and it is still OBD0.

Since you're OBD0, your ECU has a neat little window with an LED that flashes the codes. Try checking before turning the vehicle off next time.

 

I have been checking and getting a single red blink. I originally thought the single blink meant a functioning ecu. Now i found that the O2 sensor could be bad I will be testing it per the manuals instructions. Thanks!

 

Any blinks mean there's a code, but you've discovered that.

even when i dont have a cel the light still blinks but there is a four second pause between blinks. would that be just the code stored?

 

Sounds like a code 1 or 10 depending on how long the blink is. Stored, yes.
