Default Buying a new block... Questions...

Alright, stupid questions probably, but I didn't know how to search for this...

I have a running GSR engine, but I'll probably need a new block for my turbo project, since the current block is bored to 82mm.

Can I buy a bare GSR block and transfer my crank, mains, girdle & pretty much everything else to the new block? (with new bearings of course)

Or is a block like a head, where the cam caps are head-specific?

Sorry for the stupid question... Just trying to get a gameplan together...

The block would come with caps. They are block specific like cam caps.

you could do that but it would be expensive machining. you would be better off finding a bare gsr block with original crank and switching over rods and pistons.

you just need to make sure the gsr block has original crank, caps and girdle. or else line honeing and such it gets expensive.

Crank too?

Isn't that why they make different bearing colors? What happens when someone spins a bearing and they score up the crank pretty bad.. I'm probably wrong, but I'm pretty sure that they can just put a new crank in there, using the appropriate bearing colors.

the cranks aren't block specific. just make sure you get a block with the original main caps. if you cant find one with the caps you will need an align hone.

the different bearing sizes make up for size not orientation.

Now see, that's what I thought... What about the girdle? I can't imagine that's block specific...

Just trying to minimize expenses...

i think you would rather minimize potential problems, if stuff does have to be line honed there goes everythin you saved on trying to piece stuff together.

But if I get a block with all of the caps, then what's the problem?

i would recomend just buying a block with a crank the price is not going to be much of a difference. i would say switch over the pistons and rods then sell your block and crank. the final decision is up to you but i just went through this putting my last block together and my builder told me that if its not the original crank there most is likely going to be extra machining. its up to you but i would just get a block with the original crank, caps and girdle.

screw it and just go with a stroker kit. lol

YOU DONT HAVE TO GET MACHINE WORK DONE TO CHANGE CRANKS!!!!!!!! just change bearings.

you might be able to get away with your original girdle. the girdle is doweled to your main caps just like the the mains are doweled to your block. if you get them all together from the same block you know that everything is matched.

^^^^ Was looking at my service manual, and that's what I'm getting from the teardown/rebuild procedures...

Didn't know about the girdle though...
