Default Building up a D16Z6, need some ideas.

What does it take to make a somewhat reliable all motor low 14 second d?

Slicks, Turbo, S/C, and Stripping are no-nos. Its in a 2400 pound car.... and i want to avoid going N20... but if i MUST, i will

whats a plan that will put me into low 14's? Would you reccomend a head swap, intake manifold swap, new pistons, higher compression? (a d16z6 engine w/ stock rods and pistons out of a civic VX gives you something like 12.75)

i dunno.. heres my baby now, what should i do!!!!

Get a 96+ intake mani, a b-series t/b, good i/h/e, a cam, high compression pistons, p&p, and something to control it all.

i think he's talking about the d16y8 manifold, often times called the type r manifold for the d series. getting the d16z6 in a coupe to go 14s is not hard at all. get the bolt ons, good cam, and slicks and learn how to drive it.

summit sells "steelie" wheels that are like 15x6.5 and 16x7 or 8. And there only $60 each or so. I think that would be plenty of traction for you, even with power steering off, it should managable. But the question is....you can buy a bonestock B20B or B18B for $1000 and a LS tranny for <$900 and have the same results with up the only way to go. Or you can just buy that $1500 Greddy D-Series Turbo kit....even though you say its a no-no....For 2 grand you could take the engine apart, put new seals, gaskets, rings and the turbo on there and probably have ~120-130 HP. Of course its all up to you...but you just gotta wonder if you wanna spend 2K for 30HP or 60HP.

A d16Z6 in a 2400 lb car with I/H/E should arealdy run high 14's. Try swapping to the D16Y8 intake manifold like they said above. Ive heard good results about them. Quaife LSD and learn how to launch on some really sticky tires(not slicks in your case). A lightened flywheel would be a nice addtion too.

I'm hoping to hit low 14's all day long, if not 14 flat on slicks with my new setup. I'll list what I have and costs, to give you an idea of cost.BTW, I get things at cost through my brothers engine shop...so this is a CHEAP yet great SOHC build for not much money...

D16A1 pistons from a 89 Integra, new ITM- 80 bucks w/rings
shot peened rods- free
engine gasket kit- 120
ZEX street/strip cam- 175
Crower Springs- 120
Skunk 2 retainers- 120
ported/polished head- free(16 hours of free time)
milled .020 head
D16Y8 intake manifold- 50 bucks
LS throttle body- free from friend
AEM cam gear- 90 bucks
Exedy oe replacement clutch- 90
Spare long block from friend for free which this will go in, and I can sell my current setup with a slightly worked head and get most of my money back...
I'm also going to get it tuned with Hondata, keep full interior at all times minus spare/jack/and sound deading. No PS, car never had AC. So that's going to be a 12 to 1 compression NA sohc with great flow and dyno tuned for under 900 bucks PLUS whatever I get for my current Z6...can be done for well under just the cost of a LS longblock, which you'll HAVE to get a vtec tranny for some gearing.

In your case, you could run without the spring/retainers and still get good power to 7400 with stock valvetrain. Sorry for the list

I myslef and a big fan of d-series motors. However, for what you will pay to build a fairly fasy Z6, i wouldnt do it. Just not worht the work. If you are just looking for low 14's, buy the apexi or greddy turbo kit and be done with it. And youll probably be in the high-mid 13's.

But since you are not me, ill answer your question.

Look for Spade's post on d series upgrades. There is a host of OEM parts that can swapped. So if you are a junkyard hunter, you can probably find some stuff for cheap.

d16a1 pistons from the 1st gen teg give around a 11.5:1 cr., Y8 manifold works good. Look for Bisimoto's new headers coming out. They look awesome. Then teh usual intake and exhaust and hope for the best. I will say it will be tough without slicks.

best of luck.

Mike
