Default Broken tranny

I have a GSR tranny that I broke the differential in. I was wandering how hard it would be to fix? I havent ever done any tranny work or anything and I was wanting to put my quaife thats in my SI tranny into the GSR one. How hard would this be to do on my own. I also want to put the LSD in and shim the tranny enough for reverse to work. My Si tranny I bought off a guy and he didnt shim it correctly and I have to hold (apply pressure) to reverse to get it to go back far enough for my lights to come on and it not come out of gear and grind. This past weekend I woke up to my stepdad moving my car and grinding the hell out of reverse. I would like my reverse to work no problem b/c with no power steering my man muscles arnt large enough tot turn the wheel lock to lock 1 handed.

very, very hard to do buy yourself. and if you need to be asking this ? i wouldnt recommend it at all. Inside the tranny there are 2 "towers" of gears all with many, many small rings and gear sets. All that has to come out in order to get down to the diff. Take it somewhere and def. put in that Si LSD while your at it, it will fit and it should work out real well for you.

If you have the tools and some basic mechanical knowledge, you should be able to tackle the job yourself, PROVIDED you own the Helm manual(s) [or ill-gotten facsimilies] for the transmission(s).

The Quaife that's in your Si is probably not going to fit right into the GSR transmission. The GSR/ITR diff is larger in diameter than the LS/Si unit, and so is the ring gear.

I have *heard* that you can use the Si-size diff and ring gear with the GSR countershaft pinion without issues (as they both have the same final drive ratio of 4.4), but I would do much more research before taking this as gospel.

My GSR tranny has an LS final Drive, as Does my SI tranny. I want to swap my quaife to the GSR tranny and just put like a type R LSD in the SI tranny. The differential in the GSR is broken. I assumed that it had a GSR differential just b/c its a GSR tranny. I didnt think that if it had an LS final drive that it would have a LS differential.

Sounds like you might be confusing 5th gear with the final drive.

no, it's a LS 4.266 FD in a GSR tranny. Tranny built for boost.

Josh, the open diffs for the LS and GSR are identical. (except for Ring gear ratio of course). So it's really impossible to tell which one you broke.

I can fix your old GSR tranny, by the way. Unless you just want to sell it to me.

But for your reverse problem in your Si tranny, the Reverse gear actually has a brass blocking ring and spring at the top of the stack that "holds" the fork into the "R" position. Sounds like that spring might be broke. I found mine stuck to the case magnet, in several pieces. it's shown here, in part 9, the block ring and spring are the last 2 pieces closest to the Bearing:

Additionally, you can see them clearly in the pic below, at the VERY top of the pic on the left gear Stack (mainshaft). I just can't believe the guy charged you 1000 for a tranny that won't stay in R. That's whack. Call him out.

Also, I rode in your car the day you brought it home from Atlanta in June. Wicked fast

yea i believe all b series trannies use the same differential except for lsd equip ones though. its all in the ring gear...when you change the ring gears for ls or gsr....do you have to sim it or anything becuse they are different sizes?

The GSR/ITR diffs are noticeably larger than the LS/Si diffs - unless you're talking about a 92-93 GSR transmission.
