Default ball joint

what does this do? is it an essentail suspension component?

i ask because i think i broke mine last night. i was swapping axles and when using the puller to release the joint from the LCA, the rubber cushion ruptured w/all the grease coming out. am i in any immediate trouble?

This should probably be in Newbie questions but i'm feeling generous today.

First, Yes, the ball joints are an essential part of the suspension and Yes, if you tear the rubber dust boot and don't fix it you are going to ruin the joint.

Fortunately it's an easy repair. Get a new dust boot from a Honda dealer or http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com Carefully remove the retainer clip that holds the boot to the groove in the ball joint. replace the dust boot and re-install the retainer. Honda has a special conical tool that makes slipping the ring on really easy but the tool is also really expensive. You can do it without it but be carefull not to cut or pierce the boot.
