Bad alternator or battery?
I have a crv-tec swap (si head) in a 2000 civic coupe. The alternator is from a 2000 Si. Because of the swap, I have to use a different size alternator belt than would usually be on it.
My car runs great, so real power problems other than I can't get my reverse indiglos to change color...not a big deal, and there is very slight dimming in headlights when I shift gears. Also, if I run power while cars off (like radio) for 30 minutes, by battery will die. But once I jump it and charge it, there's no problem. Otherwise my battery never dies.
So first, I am wonder if its because of the unorthodox size belt? I believe its a 95 LS belt or something. Or does any of this have to do with my battery. Or do I need to get a larger alternator?
Not a pressing question, but its been bugging the back of my brain for awhile, and I would like to figure it out.
Please forward any tests you think I should try to get to the bottom of this.
Thanks!
Peace

If the car recharges the battery after it goes down it's most likely not the alternator. But dimming while driving usually is the alternator. Is the belt at the right tension? you could try a new battery and see what happens.. Just my $.02
If it is an alternator problem, I don't think the belt would matter as much as the alternator pulley. Is it the same size as the stock alternator pulley? You might have underdriven if it's larger.
Well since its underdriven thats probably why. Go get your battery tested. Do you leave the radio on for long periods of time without startying the car? That can kill a battery pretty easily. Also after you start the car unplug the battery(positive side) and see if the car turns off. If it does then its the alternator.
