Default B20 Question

Please excuse me if this is not in the right section of the forum. I have looked extensively for a few bits of info and seem to come up short. There is not a good deal of info on non vtec b20s that are stock, because most people build them up.

I don't know much about b-series I had an h22 lude, and then a 07 si coupe that was recently totaled by an f350 (people always ask for pics and I have them, but don't do the wreck justice lol. 22k in damages). So now I have spare time and want to build a reliable b20 non vtec DD for my ek.

All I want is to get the b20 in the car running reliably. I know I will need a gsr trans and shift linkage, engine mounts, and an ecu from an ls. But most of the builds I read have many other parts they have put in to build the car up. Eventually I would like to make it vtec, but for now I just want it running, so is this all I need?

Thank you in advance.

Oh and hello, my first post on these forums.

You dont necessarily need the gsr transmission. You could go a cheaper route for an ls trans if you just want it to run. More info would help also. What car is it going into?

Sorry I've been busy today, it's going into a 98 lx sedan. I eventually do want to build it up, but for now I will be happy with just the b20/gsr trans. Just making sure as to everything I need that isn't listed on my first post.

Going from a k20 to a d16 is very sad lol, I need atleast a little more umph until my settlement goes through.

Thanks

Okay, thanks for the input, will it be reliable with the listed parts? Just making sure I feel weird with diff motor components as I haven't dealt with them before.

Depends on which b20 you have. what is the block code ? Which intake and other parts are you planning on using.

Agreed, but almost any b-series hydro transmission is almost $1000 . Thats one of the main reasons why alot of people stay away from doing b swaps anymore.

Not true, Only built hydro trannies or the stock ITR tranny will run at this price. Gsr/ls/b16 are no more then $600 tops.

If you keep everything stock yes it will be reliable.

Yeah I found a gsr trans for 500 i just picked up, I am either getting the b20b or b20z, either way I am only getting the one with the good comp ratio. 145 hp version, I am gonna go look at a couple diff long blocks today, but I might just buy from hmotors to save me a pita. Also might buy the hasport motor mounts now so I dont have to change when I go vtak.

Also found some ls ecus I might go look at today if I got time, Idk if I will though its my bday today I'll prolly be at the bar all night.

Thanks again for all the info everyone, no one likes to build up the b20's to stock specs so it was very hard to find info on a motor that wasn't already vtec or built up.

Will I be able to use the shift linkage from my lx for the conversion?

This is what I got so far that I need:

B20z long block, Gsr Trans
Ls ecu, motor mounts
b-series shift link?

Just making sure this is everything I need I will probably be doing the swap this coming weekend. This will be reliable right?

Thanks

The lx will not work. You need an actual B series shift linkage.

Okay cool, so b20z longblock, gsr trans, b-series shift linkage, motor mounts, and ls ecu and I'm good to go? If so I only need the shift linkage and the block and I'm all set to swap!!!

Here's some pics of the wreck if anyone is interested...in the background that silver f-350 is the one that hit me. He drove off with a scratch on his front bumper.

Okay, hopefully my last idiotic question. My eyes are about to fall out of my skull from all the searching I've done.

I picked up a b20b low comp

Would replacing the pistons, rods, and bearings (I guess the intake mani as well) be the way to go to achieve b20z comp from the b20b? I was having a hard time finding a used b20z in my area, and didn't feel like spending over 800 to have someone ship me one.

Also, if anyone has any opinions as to which pistons, rods etc. to get that would help as well. I've been reading that the rs machine type r spec pistons might be my best bet.

Also this WILL be a dd and reliability is key. All I wanted was to drop the b20z in but now I will have to compromise.

Thanks again everybody

It will be stock for a while, I have time on my hands from the wreck, I will have the motor in and running soon hopefully. Once I get it running, I will want to start buying parts to build, it will just take some time as I can't work at the moment.

I was jw if that was what it took to get the compression bumped up to b20z standards. Eventually I will have a new dd and can make the sedan my project car, then I will be going the vtec route. Supposedly my settlement should be coming through around dec, I'll probably buy a new si again, perfect for dd.

Bump- New info.

Found an ls engine for dirt cheap, already got my b20 stuff but most of it correlates with the ls as well.

It comes with:
dc headers, skunk 2 intake manifold, stage 1 exedy clutch, stock ls computer, wiring harness, new timing belt, new seals and waterpump

I already grabbed a gsr trans and motor mounts, it is an obd2a engine so it should be fine with my 98. Only question is that it was in an eg, so are any components on the engine going to be designed for that year besides wiring harness I should be concerned about?

Hoping the ls I found will be easier to just "drop in" and produce more power stock than the low comp I have.

Any suggestions will be great
Thanks
