B20 head removal
I am removing the had from my 2001 B20Z. I was wondering if anyone out there had a tech manual. I need to know the order that I need to remove cam bearing caps, the head bolts, and the torque specs for them. If anyone out there has this information, or any other suggestions, please share. Thanks for your time.
Take off the valve cover, timing belt, etc... When you got everything disconnected... Untorque the cam caps from the outers and work in... It's not totally neccesary but it's the way I always do it... When you get down to untorquing the head bolt do so just like this...
Removal
IN 2..6..10..8..4
EX 3..7...9...5...1
Install <-- The exact opposite...
IN 9..5..1..3..7
EX 8..4..2..6..10
With the cam caps just work from the inner>out... I always torque a head in three incriments and triple check the torque on them after every one sequence... 21>42>63ft./lbs. Peace

i am taking the head off my b20b and i took all the bolts out of the brackets holding the cams in, and i was wondering why the brackets weren't coming out. i didn't want to start prying on anything, let me know some steps to follow if possible, thanks.

Just wiggle the cam caps a little and/or rotate the cam... If you choose to rotate the cam, MAKE SURE THAT the motor is 90 or 270 degrees past TDC (all pistons level) This will ensure that you won't have any piston-valve contact... I wouldn't recommend prying on the caps, but you don't be scared to pull on them a bit... Good Luck and let us know if you need anything else... Peace

directly under the cams, what are the little things with the ball joints on teh bottom....the retainers? and are they all the same so i don 'thave to worry about mixing them together, and is there anything else i need to knwo before removing the head?
Those are actually the rockers and they are all the same... The retainers are the things on the top of the valve springs which "semi" lock them to the valves... I say "semi" because what really locks the retainer to the valve are the keepers... I'm pretty sure that about covers all you need before you pull the head but if you have any more questions feel free to ask... Latez
They should only go to 63 ft/lbs... I do my sequence in three even incriments which is a little different than factory but that's just me... 21, 42, and finally to 63 ft/lbs... Don't be scared when breaking them loose, they'll feel like a lot more than what they are... Latez

got 9 head bolts off, but when i went to do the 10th, the head of the bolt completely stripped. what do i do!! is there any tool made to get this out? it is pretty down in there as you know. help!
I've seen this same problem before and it took drilling out the middle of the head bolt (you want a drill bit the diameter of the bolts shaft) to get it off... Just drill down about the depth (thickness) of the head, then if you can still somewhat get a socket on there, put it on and rotate it... Should snap it right off... You'll have to get a new headbolt and clean out both the block and the cylinder head (if you are reusing), but it should work just fine... Good Luck again...
