Default B20 in a 2000 Civic SI

So my buddy daily drives his 2000 Black EM1 and the engine is smoking bad and burning some oil. It is his daily driver so he cannot have any long amount of down time (2 days tops). So he wants to know if he can go to our local engine importer and pick up a b20 and swap that in till he can rebuild his motor or replace it. I assume the car will throw codes because it will not be a vtec motor anymore. Will running a b20 edu help with this? Will he have to change any wiring if he does use the b20 ecu?

I am trying to have him pull the b16 head off take it to get checked and cleaned/replace the valve seals and slap it on the b20 block and roll like that but he just wants to run non vtec till he rebuilds the b16.

Thanks in advance for any help.
