Since it is a DOHC VTEC, it can't be that bad. In fact, it is not bad at all. Actually, this motor is fairly similar to the B16A. It uses the same head assembly and block. Only the crank, rods, and (probably) pistons are different. Simply put, it is a B16A that has been stroked to 1.7 liters. Its compression ratio is also slightly lower. Power output is the same 160HP as the B16A. But naturally, you get more torque due to the larger displacement (117ft-lb vs 111ft-lb). The rod ratio is not as good as the B16A (about 1.62:1 vs 1.74:1). But 1.62:1 is still pretty good for a Honda motor. If you get the motor with the transmission, you get a very nice transmission - the YS1. But the main problem with this motor is its rareness and cost.

i would get the b17... vtec is a beautiful thing, plus it also has low compression... great for turbo

b18B vs B17a ... for what you lose in torque you gain in hp and top end. plus itr cams, Intake manifold bolt right up for some easy bolt-in power.

B17 has more potential if built right.

there's nothing 'bad' about B17A engines at all.....at least not as 'bad' as any B16A engine is. What bad things have you heard?

The B17 is a rad/rare engine.
It utilizes everything a B16A uses minus the crank & rods, which are changed to compensate for .1 liter gain. The B17 basically makes a bit more torque and some HP in comparison to a B16.

Any engine upgrades you can buy for a B16A will work on a B17A engine; they're essentially the same engine minus the fact a B17A has a different crank/rods/& pistons. if you wanna raise compression (which I suggest to do in a B17), you can easily go with some OEM B16A/Civic/or IntegraR pistons, they're all intercheangeable. Same goes for camshafts, and heads.

ok, then you'll want to stick with the stock B17 pistons then, that is if you dont want to go aftermarket lower compression pistons. A stock B16/B17 block can handle up to aprox. 350hp (i could be a little off tho), respectively.
