Default AWFUL KNOCKING noise from engine

Well to start with, I have a 95 civic ex coupe and just recently (4 days ago) my car has been making a werid sound(coming from the driver's side of the engine) . The sound can be best described as this: sounds like a fast woodpecker or a firing machine gun. So in other words, like a fast constant knocking. It doesnt really get louder or softer. It only happens when I am in motion and the car is shifted to neutral or in gear but not accelerating. When I am braking, completely stopped, or in gear and pressing the gas, it does not happen. I am 97% sure the sound is coming from the engine and not like the suspension or wheel because of the conditions the sound comes. Any ideas as to what this might be? Thanks alot!

i had a similar problem ended up spinning a rod bearing shortly afterwards. are you getting oil pressure? did you check your oil level?

Sounds like rod bearing problems to me. Start saving for a rebuild, or a new motor.

with engine running, disconnect one plug wire and connect it back, if its rod knock it will stop when you pull the plug for that cylinder.

the car has 102k miles. I had the timing belt and water pump replaced at 92k. Someone mentioned the CV joints? What exactly are these and could this be the problem?

If it happens when you are idling/not in motion it couldn't possibly be the CV joints. Those will usually start knocking when you go around a corner. Not knowing a hell of alot about clutch assemblies, could it possibly be a throwout bearing?

It could be the throwout bearing, but then the noise must go away once you press down on the clutch. My 90 SI does that right now; too cold to change out.

Especially since you apparently don't know much about engines.
TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC. DON'T DRIVE IT ANYMORE.
