Auto Transmission Shift Point Problem...
Hi,
My girlfriend just received an older Honda from her parents that hadn’t been driven in a while and I have noticed some issues with the automatic 3 speed transmission in it. The shift points seem to be at around 17mph for 1-2nd and 45-50mph for 2nd-3rd…The 1-2nd seems normal but the 2nd-3rd seems way too high…I don’t recall it ever doing that before they had the engine rebuilt recently…Is there any fix for this and what could cause this in your opinion?
Thanks a lot if you have any advice for us…
Cheers,
DJ

Does the rpm at which it shifts from 2-3 seem too high? Could be many things. Maybe a stuck spool in one of the bands. Usually the first thing to try when an auto trans is acting up is to change the fluid and filter and see if that helps.
Yeah the RPMs seem WAY too high actually...There is no tach on her car but it feels like it is close to 4000rpms...Not right...It didn't use to do that...What's odd is 1-2nd is ok though...I don't understand what it could be...The transmission shifts fine and feels fine otherwise and the car runs good too
Let's see.. An auto tranny switches gears accordig to oil pressure.. So if there is a pressure loss, it could cause the tranny to shift late.
But if I recall correctly, a 2-3 shift means that the Intermediate Servo moves back as oil pressure is drained from underneath it. And as it does that, it allows the Intermediate Band to release the Direct Clutch. So my guess would have to be that Intermediate Servo isn't releasing the Intermediate Band fast enough to allow the tranny to shift into 3rd gear.
What could cause the Servo to release pressure slowly?... I don't know, maybe the Check Ball is stuck.. I can't remember.. But whatever the problem is, good luck!..
